Visual inspection is not enough. You must measure the elongation using a specialized chain gauge or a caliper over a specific number of links (e.g., over 10 pitches). If the elongation exceeds 2% or 3% (depending on the manufacturer's standard), the chain has reached its fatigue limit and must be discarded. Inspect the chain anchors and clevis pins. Look for "turned pins" which indicate that the locking mechanism has failed and the pin is rotating in the housing, wearing it oval. Check for "stiff links" or kinked sections.   • What should be checked when inspecting boom chain anchor bolt and nut inspection?

    While the chain takes the tension, the anchor bolts connect the chain to the boom structure. These bolts are under constant cyclic stress. It is obvious that a chain is only as strong as its weakest connection point. Inspect the adjusting nuts on the chain anchors. They must be secured with a split pin or a locking plate to prevent them from vibrating loose. Check the threads on the anchor bolts. If the threads are stripped or show signs of stretching (necking), the bolt is about to fail. Verify the tension balance. Both chains (left and right) must share the load equally. If one chain is slack while the other is tight, the tight chain is taking double the load and will fail prematurely. Adjust the anchor nuts to equalize the tension.     The energy chain, located along the top of the boom, protects the vital hydraulic hoses and electrical cables that power the spreader. As the boom extends and retracts, this plastic or steel chain flexes constantly, creating significant friction and wear points. It is obvious that a failure inside this chain usually results in a complete machine shutdown. Inspect the plastic links of the chain for cracking or breakage. If a link breaks, the sharp edges will instantly cut into the soft rubber of the hydraulic hoses. Check the mounting brackets at both the base and the tip of the boom. Loose brackets can cause the entire chain to derail, twisting the hoses into a knot. Open the chain (if possible) or inspect from the side to ensure the hoses are not "corkscrewing" (twisting) inside. Hoses must lie flat. If they are twisted, their life expectancy is reduced by 50%.   • What does maintaining spreader side-shift chain tension and lubrication involve?

    The side-shift function allows the operator to move the container left or right to align it with a chassis or stack. This movement is driven by a hydraulic cylinder and a set of chains or a direct cylinder. For chain- driven systems, it is obvious that broken chains render the machine useless. Inspect the side-shift chains for tension. They should be tight enough to prevent sagging but loose enough to allow smooth movement. Loose chains can jump off the sprocket or jam in the beam housing. Check the chain anchors. The connecting links (master links) are the weakest point. Look for cracked plates or missing cotter pins. Lubricate the chains daily.     The chains that telescope the spreader are anchored to the beams by threaded bolts or clevises. These anchors take the full force of extension. It is obvious that a broken anchor leaves one beam stuck while the other moves, twisting the spreader. Inspect the threaded rods for fatigue cracks at the root of the thread. This is a common failure point. Check the adjusting nuts. They must be double-nutted or pinned. Vibration loosens them. Inspect the mounting ears on the beam. Look for elongation of the holes.   • What does maintaining boom chain pulley (sheave) bearings involve?

    The leaf chains run over large steel pulleys (sheaves). These pulleys have internal bearings. It is obvious that a seized bearing causes the chain to slide instead of roll, grinding flat spots on the pulley and chain. Relieve chain tension and spin the pulleys by hand. They must turn smoothly. Check for side-to-side wobble. Worn bearings cause the pulley to tilt, making the chain rub against the cheek plates. Inspect the root of the pulley groove.   • How is lift chain wear measured, and when must the chain be replaced?

    The chain must not have extended more than 3%. Measure the length of the 25 links that travel over the chain wheel first and most often during lifting — that's where the extension is greatest — and compare the measurement with the value in the table.

    If the 3% limit is exceeded, the chains must be replaced.

  • What wear limits apply to a side chain, and how often should it be inspected?

    Replace the chain if the head of the pin has worn more than 25% of its initial head length, or if the plate thickness has worn more than 20% of its initial thickness.

    Inspect the chain at least every 3 months or every 1000 hours of operation, whichever comes first.

    Adjust the chain tensioner 2 mm at a time, and repeat the adjustment until the chain tension is correct.

    After 1-2 years, or once the adjustment range has been fully used up, remove a link from the chain instead of continuing to rely on the tensioner.

    Check the length of the skew chain every 4000 operating hours.

    There are 18 main hoist pulleys in total, fitted at the trolley frame, headblock and girder end. The nylon pulley at the boom end, used only for rope re-reeving, does not need replacing; the pulleys subject to replacement are the 16 forged pulleys at the other positions.
