Short answers to precise questions on the lift boom, fifth wheel, steering and hydraulic fluid of the Kalmar Ottawa terminal tractor, one fact per card, each with its source stated in the text. For the overall picture, see the Kalmar Ottawa terminal tractors technical legacy guide.
Kalmar Ottawa T2: what carries the fifth wheel?
A hydraulically operated boom pivoted on the frame behind the cab, according to the Ottawa T2 operator's manual (2014 edition), the HIT SRL technical desk notes. The same manual states that the boom is powered by a PTO and a hydraulic pump mounted on the transmission, as set out in the HIT SRL technical cards. The standard boom has both power up and power down, according to the 2014 operator's manual. The manual places the boom lever on the right-hand console beside the seat, next to the shift lever.

Kalmar Ottawa T2: how are the fifth wheel jaws opened from the cab?
By a standard air-operated unlatch cylinder, worked from a push-type valve on the right-hand console behind the shifter, according to the Ottawa T2 operator's manual (2014 edition), as HIT SRL's technical desk reads it. Once opened, the kingpin jaws stay open until the fifth wheel couples to a trailer kingpin, according to the same manual. When pulling out from under a trailer, the 2014 operator's manual has the control held down until the fifth wheel has cleared the kingpin, as recorded by the HIT SRL technical desk. The manual's check of the control is made with the air above 100 psi.

Kalmar Ottawa T2: where is the hydraulic fluid level checked?
On the gauge outside the single high-capacity hydraulic reservoir on the frame rail, against the 'Full Cold' line, according to the Ottawa T2 operator's manual (2014 edition), as recorded at HIT SRL. The same manual states that the boom lift, the power steering and the cab tilt all work from this one reservoir, as logged by the HIT SRL technical desk. For the reading, the 2014 operator's manual has the boom raised and lowered two or three times, then fully lowered with the engine stopped. The operator's manual does not print the reservoir capacity.

Kalmar Ottawa T2: what kind of power steering does the tractor have?
An integral recirculating-ball power steering gear fed by the transmission-mounted hydraulic pump, according to the Ottawa T2 maintenance manual, as HIT SRL's technical desk reads it. The fluid comes from the reservoir shared with the boom and the cab tilt, the same manual states. The manual also describes optional hydrostatic steering, with an orbital control valve carrying the steering wheel, a pump on the engine or on a transmission PTO, and steering cylinders on the front axle, as recorded by the HIT SRL technical desk. According to the maintenance manual, the metering section of that valve can act as a manual pump if the hydraulic pump is inoperable.

Kalmar Ottawa T2: how many hydraulic subsystems does the tractor have?
Three, the boom (hoist), the cab tilt and the power steering, according to the Ottawa T2 maintenance manual, as set out in the HIT SRL technical cards. They share only the reservoir, the return filter inside the tank and the fluid, each having its own control valve and cylinders, the same manual states. According to the manual, steering and boom use the same pump, and a priority valve sends the first four gallons per minute of flow to the open-centered steering circuit, the HIT SRL technical desk notes. The description of the hydraulic diagrams in the manual speaks of one electric motor with integral pump on the transmission, shared by the three systems, while its cab tilt section places the electric tilt pump on the reservoir, serving the cab alone.

Kalmar Ottawa T2: how is the boom raised?
By two double-acting hydraulic cylinders, 4 inches (100 mm) in diameter, mounted just ahead of the rear axle, according to the Ottawa T2 maintenance manual, as logged by the HIT SRL technical desk. Restrictor fittings in the base-end work ports control the lowering speed, the same manual states. Lift is 17.7 inches (450 mm), and the oil comes from a fixed-displacement gear pump on the transmission, rated 10 gallons (38 liter) per minute at a high idle of approximately 1200 rpm, according to the manual, as recorded at HIT SRL. Kalmar Ottawa T2: when must the fifth wheel jaws be repaired or replaced?
When their free play, measured with a fifth wheel jaw gauge, exceeds 1/8 inch (3.175 mm), according to the Ottawa T2 operator's manual (2014 edition), as recorded by the HIT SRL technical desk. The repair or replacement follows the component manufacturer's recommendation, the same manual states. According to the Ottawa T2 maintenance manual, the jaws are opened by an air cylinder controlled by a spring-loaded, normally closed push button on the instrument panel, and the latch stays open until a trailer king pin closes it, as HIT SRL's technical desk reads it. Its preventive maintenance check has the jaws unlatch when the dash control is pressed with system air pressure above 100 psi, the maintenance manual states. Jaw wear limits for an individual unit come from the manual that comes with the tractor.
