Kalmar Ottawa T2: when can someone work under the tilted cab?

HIT SRL technical desk · Kalmar Ottawa terminal tractors technical card · October 2026

Only when the safety prop, which drops automatically onto the tilt cylinder at 45 degrees of standard electric tilt, is properly engaged, according to the Ottawa T2 operator's manual (2014 edition), as logged by the HIT SRL technical desk. The same manual has the prop release cable pulled and let go after about 15 inches (381 mm) of travel, the tilt stopped when the prop falls onto the cylinder and the cab lowered until it rests on it, as recorded at HIT SRL. After lowering, the 2014 operator's manual has the tilt switch held DOWN for 5 seconds and the cab latch checked as fully engaged. Before a particular cab is raised, its tilt steps are read in the manual that comes with the tractor.

Kalmar Ottawa T2: what does the maintenance manual say about the cab safety prop?

HIT SRL technical desk · Kalmar Ottawa terminal tractors technical card · October 2026

Nobody may stand or work under the raised cab unless the safety prop on the tilt cylinder is locked in position, a rule printed as a DANGER notice in the Ottawa T2 maintenance manual, as recorded by the HIT SRL technical desk. The manual describes the prop as a solid arm that locks the extended tilt cylinder, released by a cable from the tilt switch station, and asks everyone to stay clear while the cab is lowered, as HIT SRL's technical desk reads it. According to the same manual, the latching mechanism makes a loud sound when the cab reaches the full down position. The steps for a given cab are in the manual of each tractor.

HIT SRL technical desk · Kalmar Ottawa terminal tractors technical card · October 2026

A safety bar is placed between the bottom of the deck and the frame where it cannot slip, and the cab is lowered onto it until all pressure is off the cylinder, according to the Ottawa T2 maintenance manual, the HIT SRL technical desk notes. The manual also has a safety strut hold the cab raised, as set out in the HIT SRL technical cards. If the tilt system has failed, the same manual has the cab latch released with hydraulic pressure from the tilt pump or a small hand or electric pump, and the cab lifted to full tilt with an overhead hoist. Important — general guidance only – Kalmar Ottawa Terminal Tractors Technical Cards

The information on this page is general technical guidance based on the manufacturer's technical documentation consulted in the course of work for customers or found in public sources, on published sources on the history of Kalmar, and on reports from technicians who service these machines, in contact with HIT SRL. It is not machine-specific and does not replace the manufacturer's documentation.

Always refer to the operation and maintenance manual issued for your specific machine, model, serial number and configuration. Specifications, tolerances, tightening torques, service intervals and fluid types vary between manufacturers, between models of the same manufacturer, between production series of the same model, and with the operating environment: two visually identical components may be tightened to different torque values depending on who built the machine, and a unit working in arctic conditions requires different lubricants and service intervals from an identical unit working in tropical heat. Local regulations may impose further requirements. Where this page and your machine's manual differ, the manual prevails.

Maintenance and repair work must be carried out only by qualified personnel, with the machine isolated and secured according to the applicable safety procedures.

HIT Srl accepts no liability for damage, injury or loss arising from the use of this general information.
