HIT SRL technical desk · Kalmar Ottawa terminal tractors technical card · October 2026

By a professional towing service with the rear wheels lifted off the road and the steering axle locked straight ahead, according to the Ottawa T2 operator's manual (2014 edition), as recorded by the HIT SRL technical desk. The same manual calls for caging the spring brakes only when the front axle has spring brakes. The 2014 operator's manual also warns that tires marked Off Highway may be damaged when towed on the road, as HIT SRL's technical desk reads it. The Ottawa T2 maintenance manual adds a towing limit of 55 mph and keeps the front axle load within the gross axle weight rating. The towing method that applies is the one in the manual of the specific tractor.

HIT SRL technical desk · Kalmar Ottawa terminal tractors technical card · October 2026

It is not recommended, and if it must be done a rigid tow bar is used, according to the Ottawa T2 operator's manual (2014 edition), as HIT SRL's technical desk reads it. The same manual has the driveline to the rear drive axles disconnected or all their axle shafts removed, the spring brakes on all rear drive wheels caged and the wheels blocked before the spring brakes are released. The 2014 operator's manual advises against a chain or cable, as recorded by the HIT SRL technical desk. If the tractor is already hooked to the towing vehicle before the brakes are released, the manual wants that vehicle's parking brake set and its wheels blocked. The specific tractor's own manual gives the procedure to follow.

HIT SRL technical desk · Kalmar Ottawa terminal tractors technical card · October 2026

A speed of no more than 55 mph (89 km/h), with proper equipment fastened to main structural parts and never to the bumper, according to the Ottawa T2 maintenance manual, as set out in the HIT SRL technical cards. The same manual uses the tow hooks or tow eyes built into the frame together with safety chains, and has loose parts secured. The manual forbids anyone to go under an elevated vehicle without adequate safety stands, the HIT SRL technical desk notes. With the rear wheels raised, the manual keeps the steering wheel secured straight ahead and the front axle load within the gross axle weight rating. The maintenance manual does not say which towing method is preferred, while the Ottawa T2 operator's manual (2014 edition) recommends a professional towing service with the rear lifted. The manual of each tractor sets the towing method.

The same manual warns that rapid pumping can use up the system air and apply the spring brakes. The earlier manual states that the rear wheels can then lock in an uncontrolled skid, as recorded at HIT SRL. Braking technique for a given unit follows the tractor's own manual.

Kalmar Ottawa T2: which trailer air lines must be connected when towing?

HIT SRL technical desk · Kalmar Ottawa terminal tractors technical card · October 2026

Both, the blue service line and the red supply line, always, according to the Ottawa T2 operator's manual (2014 edition), as recorded by the HIT SRL technical desk. With only the red supply line connected, the same manual states that the trailer service brakes do not work and the tractor service brakes do all the braking for the combination. The 2014 operator's manual adds that the tractor parking brake control also acts on the trailer spring brakes, as HIT SRL's technical desk reads it. The Ottawa T2 maintenance manual has both lines connected to release the trailer parking brakes. The line connections for a tractor are those of the manual of each tractor.

Kalmar terminal tractor before the T2: how are the trailer air lines used?

HIT SRL technical desk · Kalmar Ottawa terminal tractors technical card · October 2026

The blue service line and the red supply line are both connected whenever a trailer is towed, according to the earlier Kalmar tractor operator's manual, the HIT SRL technical desk notes. The same manual states that with the supply line alone the trailer service brakes do not work and braking distances grow dramatically. In the spotting steps of the earlier manual, once both lines and the electrical cable are on, the yellow parking brake control and the red trailer air supply are pushed in with the treadle fully applied, as set out in the HIT SRL technical cards. The manual then has the tractor roll a very short distance and brake, to confirm the trailer service brakes before the trailer is moved. The checks to make are given in the tractor's own manual.

Kalmar terminal tractor before the T2: when can the boom be raised or lowered?

HIT SRL technical desk · Kalmar Ottawa terminal tractors technical card · October 2026

Never while the tractor and trailer are moving, which the earlier Kalmar tractor operator's manual describes as a roll-over hazard, as HIT SRL's technical desk reads it. The same manual has the boom working only with the engine running, and lowering also needs the transmission in neutral. According to the earlier manual, the engine may be idled higher for faster boom travel only in neutral, as recorded by the HIT SRL technical desk. Boom operation for each unit follows the manual that comes with the tractor.

At no more than 15 mph, slowing down for every corner, according to the earlier Kalmar tractor operator's manual, as set out in the HIT SRL technical cards. The same manual never lifts a trailer higher than needed to clear the landing gear from the ground. The earlier manual links excessive cornering speed and a trailer raised too high to roll-over, the HIT SRL technical desk notes. The manual also forbids towing trailers without both brake lines connected and working. Towing speeds are set by the tractor's own manual.

HIT SRL technical desk · Kalmar Ottawa terminal tractors technical card · October 2026

On public streets or highways, with the fifth wheel in the down position, according to the earlier Kalmar tractor operator's manual, as logged by the HIT SRL technical desk. The same manual engages the manual secondary lock by removing the hairpin clip on the lock handle and letting the lock pivot behind the locking yoke, as recorded at HIT SRL. The Ottawa T2 operator's manual (2014 edition) gives the same rule without describing the hairpin clip. The use of the lock on each unit follows the specific tractor's own manual.

HIT SRL technical desk · Kalmar Ottawa terminal tractors technical card · October 2026

By backing under it, fifth wheel fully down and the jaws unlatched, raising it until its supports are just off the ground and backing firmly into the kingpin, according to the Ottawa T2 operator's manual (2014 edition), as recorded by the HIT SRL technical desk. The same manual then has a forward tug to check the lock, a lift to travel height, the parking brake applied, both air lines and the electrical cable connected and the trailer brakes checked with a very short roll. To leave the trailer, the 2014 operator's manual applies its parking brakes with the red trailer air supply control and lowers it onto its supports, as HIT SRL's technical desk reads it. The manual then stores the lines and holds the unlatch valve down while pulling away. What to do on a particular unit is written in the specific tractor's own manual.

The information on this page is general technical guidance based on the manufacturer's technical documentation consulted in the course of work for customers or found in public sources, on published sources on the history of Kalmar, and on reports from technicians who service these machines, in contact with HIT SRL. It is not machine-specific and does not replace the manufacturer's documentation.

Always refer to the operation and maintenance manual issued for your specific machine, model, serial number and configuration. Specifications, tolerances, tightening torques, service intervals and fluid types vary between manufacturers, between models of the same manufacturer, between production series of the same model, and with the operating environment: two visually identical components may be tightened to different torque values depending on who built the machine, and a unit working in arctic conditions requires different lubricants and service intervals from an identical unit working in tropical heat. Local regulations may impose further requirements. Where this page and your machine's manual differ, the manual prevails.

Maintenance and repair work must be carried out only by qualified personnel, with the machine isolated and secured according to the applicable safety procedures.
