Fantuzzi FDC Front Lift Trucks — Technical Legacy Guide
General guidance only — always follow the operation and maintenance manual for your specific machine.
Summary
According to the manuals, FDC is the designation of a family of Fantuzzi rubber-tyred front lift trucks, as recorded by the HIT SRL technical desk. Depending on model and equipment, the service documentation describes them as trucks designed to lift and transport empty containers (FDC 18 K, FDC 20 K, FDC 25 K and FDC 25 J7), as front fork-lift trucks for full containers (FDC 420 G3, FDC 450 G4, FDC 500 G5 and FDC 550 G5), and as fork trucks for heavy materials, from the FDC 160 to the FDC 480, which can also take special equipment such as coil rams and log tongs. The manufacturer's manuals, in editions from 2002 to 2013, carry the Fantuzzi Reggiane name and, in 2013, Terex; older manuals carry the name of Officine Meccaniche Fantuzzi. The present owner of the Fantuzzi Reggiane brand states that new Fantuzzi Reggiane machines are no longer sold and that it supports those still in operation. This guide sets out how the models differ, the equipment they list, the planned-maintenance intervals and the main data; reports from the field are labelled as such.
Model identification
The manuals group the FDC models by the load they handle. The letters after the size (K, J, G, S) are not explained in the documentation and are treated here as commercial designations.
Empty container handlers
- FDC 18 K — one specification table covers the FDC 18 K4, K5 and K6: 8,000 kg capacity, empty weight on the name plate, wheelbase 4,000 mm, turning radius 800 mm inside and 5,500 mm outside, four front and two rear 12.00-24 tyres (2002 and 2005 editions).
- FDC 20 K6 — 9,000 kg capacity in its 2002 table, with the other values of the FDC 18 K table.
- FDC 25 K — one table covers the FDC 25 K6, K7 and K8: 9,000 kg capacity, empty weight on the name plate, wheelbase 4,500 mm, turning radius 800 and 6,000 mm, 14.00-24 tyres (2002 to 2008 editions). The 2007 FDC 25 K6 manual names empty ISO containers from 20 to 40 feet, with 30 feet as an option, and the FDC 25 K7 manuals also cover a Double Box spreader.
- FDC 25 J7 — its 2006 table, headed FDC 25K, gives 9,000 kg capacity, 41,000 kg without load and 12.00-24 tyres.
The K-series tables share a travel speed printed as 25 km/h without load and 27 km/h with load, noise levels of 85 dB(A) outside and 75 dB(A) in the cab, servo-assisted front service brakes with wet discs, a mechanical disc parking brake, 24 V batteries of 150 Ah and a hydrodynamic transmission with torque converter. The optional rear brakes are wet discs in some editions of the tables and dry discs in others. A Fantuzzi brochure presents the FDC 25K6, 25K7 and 25K8 together as SkyStackers.
Laden container handlers (G series)
The specification tables of the G series, identical in the editions from 2002 to 2007, give empty weights of 60,000 kg for the FDC 420 G3, 64,000 kg for the FDC 450 G4 and 67,000 kg for the FDC 500 G5; the FDC 550 G5 manual of 2007 reproduces these three tables. These tables give Weldox 700 and Fe 510 D steels, a travel speed of 25 km/h empty and 24 km/h loaded, 18.00-25 tyres at 10 bar, 24 V batteries of 200 Ah, power-shift clutches with four forward and four reverse gears, and tanks of 807 litres of hydraulic fluid and 605 litres of fuel. The tables do not state a capacity.
Fork trucks for general cargo
The 2013 specification table, in the Terex edition, gives rated capacities of 16,000 kg for the FDC 160, 18,000 kg for the FDC 180, 20,000 kg for the FDC 200, 25,000 kg for the FDC 250 and its RoRo version, which has a three-stage mast, and 28,000 kg for the FDC 280, with total weights from 24,000 to 40,000 kg. The FDC 250 table of 2005 gives 25,000 kg capacity, 38,000 kg empty weight, a width of 3,000 mm and a wheelbase of 4,200 mm. Other models named in the manuals are the FDC 200 S3, FDC 320, FDC 350, FDC 360 and FDC 480, the FDC 350 RoRo and FDC 420 RoRo, and an older FDC 450. One FDC maintenance manual gives filling tables for the whole range, from the FDC 100 and FDC 120 to the FDC 500.
Same designation, different equipment
The Powertronic manual lists the FDC 320 and FDC 420 as container or cargo trucks with forks or spreader. The manuals of the FDC 200 S3 (2005) and FDC 350 (2007) open with the general description used for the empty-container models, while the equipment chapter of the FDC 350 describes a Fantuzzi SF spreader for full containers. HIT SRL service technicians report that the FDC 350 and the FDC 200 S3 exist both with forks and with a spreader.
A Mi-Jack operator's manual for the Sky Packer MJ18H6 states that the machine is manufactured by Fantuzzi. HIT SRL service technicians report that the Mi-Jack Sky Packer MJ18H6 and MJ 150/600 are FDC machines built by Fantuzzi for Mi-Jack.
Industrial history and parts supply
According to a local newspaper, Fantuzzi took over the former Officine Meccaniche Reggiane works in 1994, and one published source gives 1992; HIT SRL service technicians report 1994 as the correct year. Older FDC manuals carry the name O.M.F. Officine Meccaniche Fantuzzi, and the FDC manuals of 2002 to 2008 the Fantuzzi Reggiane name.
According to published sources, Terex agreed to buy the port equipment business of Fantuzzi Industries in August 2008, terminated that agreement in December 2008, reached a new agreement at the end of the first quarter of 2009 and completed the acquisition, together with Noell Crane, in July 2009; its announcement included lift trucks in the Fantuzzi range.
Published sources state that Konecranes agreed on 16 May 2016 to acquire Terex Material Handling & Port Solutions and completed the acquisition on 4 January 2017. Konecranes states that it has owned the Fantuzzi Reggiane brand since then, that new Fantuzzi Reggiane machines are no longer available and that it is the official provider of support and genuine spare parts for them.

Engines
The engine table of the FDC 18 K and FDC 20 K lists six six-cylinder engines: Perkins 1006-60T (117 kW at 2,500 rpm), Cummins 6BT5.9C (114 kW), Cummins 6CT8.3 (157 kW) and 6CTA8.3 (179 kW), Volvo TWD640VE (140 kW) and Volvo TWD731VE (175 kW). The FDC 25 K tables of 2004 to 2008 add the Volvo TAD720VE (174 kW at 2,000 rpm) and the Caterpillar 3126TA (170 kW at 2,200 rpm); the FDC 25 J7 table of 2006 has the same engines without the TAD720VE.
The G-series motor table lists the Cummins M11-C (330 hp), Volvo TWD1031VE (320 hp) and TWD1231VE (400 hp), Cummins N14 (400 hp) and Caterpillar 3306B in 245 hp and 300 hp ratings; the 2002 table also lists the Volvo TWD1240VE (348 hp).
Fork-truck manuals of 2005 to 2007 add the Volvo TWD1031VE (239 kW) to the FDC 25 K engines, and the FDC 360 table of 2007 also the Volvo TAD750VE (182 kW). In the 2013 table the standard engines are the Volvo TAD 650 VE (147 kW at 2,300 rpm) for the FDC 160 and FDC 180 and the Volvo TAD 750 VE (181 kW at 2,300 rpm) for the FDC 200 to FDC 280, with Cummins QSB 6.7 and QSC 8.3 as options and the Volvo TAD 761 VE and TAD 762 VE for Tier 4. The O.M.F. handbook of the older FDC 450 gives a Mercedes OM 442 engine.
For the engine itself the maintenance manuals refer to the engine manufacturer's manual; the planned-maintenance table sets oil and filter changes every 250 h, air filter replacement every 1,500 h and coolant replacement every 1,500 h or at least once a year.
Transmission
The filling tables of the FDC maintenance manual name the transmissions by model group: Clark 20000, 24000 or 28000 on the FDC 100 to FDC 180 and on the FDC 18 K and 20 K, Clark 28000 or 32000 on the FDC 25 K, Clark 32000 on the FDC 200 to FDC 350, and Clark 36000 on the FDC 380 to FDC 500, with a Caterpillar 970 unit as alternative on the FDC 380, 420 and 450. In the 2013 table the standard gearbox is a Dana TE13 on the FDC 160 and FDC 180 and a Dana TE17 on the FDC 200 to FDC 280, with ZF WG171 and ZF WG211 as options, all with three forward and three reverse gears.
Oil quantities in the filling tables range from 10.3 l (Clark 20000) to 48 l (Clark 36000); the FDC 25 K takes 28.5 l. The 2008 maintenance manual of the FDC 25 K7 checks the level at 82-85 °C with the engine at low revs, the operator's manual of the same edition at 82-93 °C; the filter is changed every 500 h and the oil every 1,500 h.
The FDC 25 K7 and FDC 550 G5 manuals describe an automatic transmission control unit, preset at the factory, that works in automatic mode, where the operator sets the highest gear allowed, or in manual mode, where it acts as anti-reverse; the G5 unit runs on 24 V DC and manages up to four forward and four reverse gears. The LMS Plus, Powertronic and Digicontrol systems put the transmission in neutral on a direction change above a set speed, with the parking brake or the declutch button, and on a faulty drive-shaft speed sensor signal; with Powertronic and Digicontrol the machine normally starts in second gear, and a button gives first gear for one start. HIT SRL service technicians report that starting in second gear is an intended function of Powertronic and Digicontrol, not a fault.
Drive axle and brakes
According to the maintenance manuals, the drive axle combines a differential with epicyclic wheel hubs, each hub housing oil-cooled multi-plate service brakes. The 2007 and 2008 maintenance manuals place the parking brake on the axle, as a disc with an electro-hydraulic caliper, while the specification tables give a mechanical disc (K series) or a dry disc on the transmission (G series). According to Kessler spare-parts lists, Fantuzzi is the customer for the drive axles of the FDC 25 K7-8, FDC 180 S7, FDC 320 and FDC 420.
According to the filling tables, differential and hubs take SAE 90-140 gear oil to API GL-5, or SAE 85W-140 above 0 °C: 30 l on the FDC 18 K, 25 K and 200, 35 l on the FDC 280 to 350 and 100 l on the FDC 380 to 500. According to the planned-maintenance table, the level is checked every 100 h and the oil changed every 1,500 h.
Steering axle
According to the manuals, steering is servo-assisted through a hydraulic cylinder on the steering axle that drives two connecting rods on the hubs, with no mechanical linkage to the steering wheel; stabiliser cylinders and wheel-hub disc brakes are optional. The maintenance table has the axle greased every 250 h and the optional discs checked every 200 h, and the manuals allow them to be re-machined by no more than 2 mm per side.
Hydraulic system as installed
According to the hydraulic diagrams, there are a double hydraulic pump of 103.3 + 17.8 cc/rev on the FDC 25 K7, a double gear pump of 109 + 16 cc/rev on the FDC 250 and a double gear pump of 87 + 63 cc/rev on the FDC 480, the HIT SRL technical desk notes.
The filling tables give hydraulic oil quantities from 365 l on the FDC 100 and FDC 120 to 800 l on the FDC 380 to FDC 500, with 470 l on the FDC 25 K, of SAE 80W oil to API GL-4 in grades for temperate and hot climates; the FDC 500 also has a 60 l brake-cooling circuit with the same oil. The G-series tables give an 807 l hydraulic tank, and the 2013 table hydraulic pressures of 160 to 180 bar for the fork trucks.
According to the maintenance manuals, fluid added to the tank must be pre-filtered to 10 microns and be of the same type as the fluid in the tank; the return filters carry an electrical blockage indicator shown in the cab. The same manuals have all hydraulic hoses replaced within 5,000 operating hours and the fluid tested periodically by specialised laboratories.
According to the maintenance manuals, the accumulator gas precharge is checked every 1,500 h by skilled staff, at a fairly constant ambient temperature with the system not under pressure; the accumulator casing must never be welded, brazed or drilled. The maintenance manuals note that seals can be replaced on almost all the pumps, that general overhaul of most gear pumps is not economical and that a pump with bearing faults or foreign-body damage should be replaced.
For pump noise the troubleshooting tables list misalignment, low or unsuitable oil, air drawn in at intake, drain or shaft seals, a tank that cannot breathe, a restricted intake, worn seals or a blocked filter; for missing or low pressure, an empty tank, a faulty gauge, an open discharge or maximum-pressure valve, excessive leaks or a pressure limiter set too low.
Structure, mast and spreader
The G-series tables give Weldox 700 and Fe 510 D for the arm and the spreader and Fe 510 D (Fe 52) for the chassis, as recorded at HIT SRL. According to the maintenance manuals, the main frame is first inspected after one year of operation and then at intervals of no more than one year, with a yearly statistical check of the bolt torque of high-strength couplings using a calibrated torque wrench. In the same manuals, cracks or flaking paint near welds call for a penetrant test, and load-bearing structures damaged by knocks or overloads are not to be repaired without the manufacturer's opinion.
According to the maintenance manuals, the mast assembly consists of a fixed mast, a telescopic mast, lifting cylinders, hoist cylinders and chains, the equipment plate and the equipment: spreader, forks or ram. Eight thrust shoes, on the fixed mast, the telescopic mast and the equipment plate, protect the slide rollers and limit side swing; their clearance from the contrasting section must stay under 1.5 mm, otherwise the shoes are replaced.
According to the chain table of the maintenance manual, only BL-type chains are used: BL 1266 on the FDC 100 to FDC 180, FDC 18 K, 20 K and 25 K6-K7, BL 1466 on the FDC 200 and 220, BL 1666 on the FDC 250 to FDC 320, BL 1688 on the FDC 380 to FDC 500, and both BL 1266 and BL 1666 on the FDC 25 K8. According to the hoist chapter of the manuals, chains are inspected at least every three months or 1,000 hours, whichever comes first; the replacement limits are 2% elongation on the most worn segment, plate-profile wear of 2.5% on one side or 4% on both, pin-head wear above 25% or plate-thickness wear above 20%, and if one chain is worn both are replaced. According to the same manuals, forks are withdrawn from service when thicknesses fall below 90% of the original values, inclination exceeds 3 degrees, the tips differ by more than 3% of the length or straightness is out by more than 0.5%.
According to the FDC 25 K manuals, the SVT 24 K spreader is a fully welded spreader for empty ISO 20 to 40 foot containers of up to 8,000 kg: it opens in 10 s and closes in 12 s, with 1.5 s twistlock rotation, side shift of plus or minus 400 mm, pile slope of plus or minus 2 degrees, 120 bar operating pressure and a weight of 3,000 kg. The FDC 25 K maintenance tables also list the SS9GM Double Box and SF45GS gantry spreaders; with the Double Box, two 40-foot refrigerated containers must not be handled with their refrigeration units on the same side. The SVT 24 K, SS9GM Double Box and SF45GS spreaders of the FDC maintenance tables have their own sections in the Fantuzzi Reggiane attachments guide.
According to its chapter in the G-series manual, the SF45GS spreader of the G series handles full ISO 20 to 40 foot containers, with 45,000 kg capacity at 20 feet and 40,000 kg at 40 feet, 16 s opening, 18 s closing, side shift of plus or minus 140 mm, pile sloping of plus or minus 2.5 degrees, 170 bar and a weight of 7,000 kg.
According to the spreader chapters of the manuals, twistlocks are replaced after 6,000 hours: on the SVT 24 K also when measurement a falls below 27 mm or dimension D by more than 5%, with non-destructive tests every year or every 3,000 hours; on the SF45GS when a exceeds 10 mm or D falls by more than 5%, with an axial play of about 0.5 mm that must not exceed 3-3.5 mm. The Powertronic manual lists gantry spreaders, normally on the FDC 320 and higher, single-box or hybrid and double-box spreaders, normally on the FDC 25K, and inverted forks-type spreaders, normally on the FDC 250 and higher.
Electrical and control
The electrical system is 24 V, with 150 Ah batteries in the K-series tables and 200 Ah in the G-series tables; the batteries are charged by an engine-driven alternator, and fastening, charge, electrolyte and terminals are checked every 250 h.
The documentation describes three control systems. According to its manual, LMS Plus, on the FDC 25 K7, FDC 25 J7 and FDC 18 K6, is a multiple CAN bus network with a single display that the machine can work without; it manages operator access by badge, transmission, engine and spreader, and keeps a malfunction black box of sensor faults, overloads and bypass use and an operative black box of the containers moved. According to its manual, the Advanced Powertronic System V5.x, produced from 2003, is listed for the FDC 25K with spreader, the FDC 280 with forks, the FDC 320 and 420 with forks or spreader and the FDC 450 with spreader, and drives transmission and engine over CAN (SAE J1939). According to the Digicontrol documentation for the FDC 550 G5, Digicontrol is a CAN bus system with units in cab, truck and spreader, an emergency CAN gateway and a colour display. A Logicontrol manual of 1998 lists separate software versions for front loaders of full containers with load cells and of empty containers with a pressure sensor.
According to the manuals, the engine does not start unless the gear selector is in neutral. According to their manuals, LMS Plus shuts the engine down on low fuel (below 5%), high transmission oil temperature (above 120 °C), high coolant temperature (above 105 °C) and low engine oil pressure (below 1 bar); Powertronic does so after a warning of at least 30 seconds for high engine oil or coolant temperature, low oil pressure or low coolant level. According to its manual, Digicontrol limits speed to 25 km/h in normal conditions, 12 km/h with the mast above about 9 m and 5 km/h in overload or with a large load and the mast extended.
The FDC manuals describe the twistlock lights the same way: green for twistlocks or hooks latched, red for unlatched and amber for a container in position. The manuals and service practice differ on green: for HIT SRL service technicians the convention in service is green = twistlocks open, container free. Given its relevance to safety, always check the convention on the specific machine and spreader before operating. According to the FDC 25 K7 manual, position sensors on each twistlock must confirm seating before latching, lifting starts only with all twistlocks latched, and in case of a fault the control system prevents raising the lifting unit; the spreader lift control does not work if the twistlock light is off. According to their manuals, LMS Plus locks mast lifting on overload or when the locked and unlocked sensors are both inactive, and allows twistlock locking and unlocking only with the seated sensor active; the optional Powertronic overload control estimates the lifted weight within 10% from a pressure sensor on the lifting cylinder and locks mast lifting above the maximum allowed.
According to the manuals, safety bypass keys and codes are for the person in charge, and the keys in the electrical compartment need two people. On the G series a lifting bypass key restores arm and twistlock lifting after a failure of the twistlock locked-on sensor; the 2002 edition describes an ELCOS protection device, where fitted, that stops the engine for coolant, oil pressure or transmission temperature faults; and the cab angle follows the spreader height in automatic mode. The FDC 25 J7 manual states wind limits: operation in all conditions with wind at 40-50 km/h, up to the 7th stacking height at 50-60 km/h, the 6th at 60-70 km/h and the 5th at 70-80 km/h.
Recurring failure points — field reports
Published field reports specific to the FDC are scarce.
Transmission dropping into neutral. Operators report, on a Fantuzzi FDC25 empty container handler, the transmission dropping into neutral while travelling forward and working again only after the machine was switched off and restarted.
What the documentation says to check: the LMS Plus, Powertronic and Digicontrol manuals state that the transmission is put in neutral when the drive-shaft speed sensor signal is wrong; the alarm is reset by selecting neutral, a false alarm clears, and with a faulty or disconnected sensor only first gear remains, while manual mode gives the other gears with all safeties inactive. HIT SRL service technicians report that when the transmission drops into neutral while travelling, the cause is almost always the speed sensor on the drive shaft. The same manuals have these systems select neutral when a direction change is attempted above the set speed and when the parking brake or the declutch button is used with a gear engaged.
Maintenance interval summary
Planned maintenance from the FDC maintenance manuals: the same table of 140 jobs appears in the editions of 2004 to 2008 for the FDC 25 K7 and FDC 25 J7, the FDC 500 G5 and FDC 550 G5, the FDC 200 S3 and the FDC 350, and other editions share a table of 138 jobs. In the planned-maintenance table, intervals are in operating hours; (1) = at least once a year; (2) = skilled staff; (3) = chain inspection every three months, recorded in a safety-inspection book.
